Two years since Sydney, and the tandem is back — this time riding straight into America’s prevailing wind, coast to coast the hard way round. St Augustine, Florida to San Diego, California, three months on the Southern Tier: alligators loitering in the drainage ditches, a Florida heat index that laughs at 40°C, spokes surrendering one by one somewhere around Louisiana, and a stretch of Texas so flat and so endless it makes the Nullarbor look like a warm-up lap. Susan’s ‘never ever again’ tally is climbing. Onward, west, into the wind.
